                  Why We Have Fly Swatters

One summer, a tired traveler sat down to rest. A fly came and started buzzing around the traveler's sweaty head. "Get away, fly," he mumbled (almost incomprehensibly). He tried to smack the fly, but instead succeeded in hitting his own head. When he hit his head, it stung, but he still slapped at the fly. When he failed, he became even more frustrated and angry. Finally, he realized his mistake. He thought, "We are likely to hurt only ourselves when we get so angry."

Source St. Lazarus became Bishop of Milan in around 439. He is believed to have developed the Rogationtide litanies, and the First Council of Orleans approved the celebration of Rogationtide. At that time, the Ostrogoths were invading Italy, but Lazarus held up. He died on March 14, 450.

Saint Vincent de Paul (1581-1660)

Vincent grew up a farmer's son, and he tended sheep when he was young. He wanted to be a priest, so Vincent studied, took up, and got ordained. His mission was to help the poor; he provided food and clothing for them. Tradition says that he was seized by pirates (while onboard a ship) and sold into slavery in North Africa! But he escaped (phew!) and made his way to Rome. He went back to France, and was appointed court chaplain to Queen Margaret of Valois. He is the patron saint of all charities.
